Imphal, Three people have died and thousands have been affected due to floods caused by heavy rains in Manipur's Imphal Valley. Officials gave this information on Thursday.

A 34-year-old man was killed and three others were injured in a landslide triggered by heavy rains on Thonglang Road in Senapati district on Wednesday. An 83-year-old woman drowned in the swollen Senapati river, officials said.

He said that a 75-year-old man in Imphal died of electrocution after coming in contact with an electric pole during the rain on Wednesday.He said that due to the rising Imphal river, many areas were submerged and water entered hundreds of houses in the Imphal valley, as a result of which people took shelter in nearby community buildings.

Flooding has been reported in at least 86 areas of Imphal West district, including Khuman Lampak, Nagaram, Sagolband, Uripok, Keesamthong and Paona areas, due to the swollen Nambul river, he said.

“Due to incessant rains, the banks of Imphal river have breached in Keerang, Khabam and Lariyangbam Leekai areas of Imphal East district and water has entered many areas, submerging hundreds of houses.

"Many areas of Hingang and Khurai assembly constituencies of Imphal East district have been badly affected, with flood water reaching people's chest level," an official said.

A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached Imphal by a special Air Force flight around 10 pm on Wednesday to lead the rescue operation, officials said.Chief Minister N Biren Singh said, "Many people and livestock have been affected due to breach in the river banks in several areas. All concerned authorities, including state government officials, security and NDRF personnel and public volunteers, have been deployed to provide assistance to the affected people. Are working tirelessly." “The stranded people are being taken to safe areas by boats.”

Meanwhile, the Irang Bailey bridge on NH 37, which connects Imphal and Silchar, collapsed at Taobam village in Noni district, disrupting road communication.
