New Delhi [India], Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has called upon the real estate sector to be prepared for the upcoming housing challenges by 2029 with a focus on innovative solutions like rain harvesting and solar powered routes, additional Secretary D Thara announced.

Speaking at the 3rd NAREDCO Mahi Convention, he stressed the need for industry players to adopt new practices and prioritize sustainability in their housing projects, according to a press release.

In his address, D Thara urged the real estate industry to rethink traditional practices and invest in technologies that enhance environmental sustainability.

He emphasized that rainwater harvesting should become a core infrastructure component in housing complexes to reduce dependence on external water sources and promote water conservation within communities.

Highlighting the vision of the new NDA government led by Prime Minister Modi, he stressed the importance of building affordable housing units equipped with amenities such as children's play areas, parks and safe walkways.He argued that these elements are important to promote healthy living and tackle issues such as childhood obesity, which are exacerbated by inadequate open spaces in urban housing complexes.

He stressed the government's commitment to implement policies that promote social upliftment in collaboration with the private sector.

NAREDCO Chairman G Haribabu also expressed similar sentiments and stressed the need for greater participation of women to effectively leverage their diverse contributions to the real estate sector.

She highlighted that while women's participation in professions like medicine and nursing reaches 40 per cent, it is much lower in real estate, hampering the sector's full potential.

Dr Niranjan Hiranandani, Chairman, NAREDCO outlined the ambitious plans approved by the new NDA government, which include construction of 3 crore housing units in the next five years, aimed at transforming both rural and urban housing scenarios.He also proposed a comprehensive slum rehabilitation project worth Rs. 25 thousand crore rupees in Mumbai, the need for government support was stressed to launch this initiative.

NAREDCO Vice Chairman Rajan Bandelkar appreciated the government's commitment to boost the affordable housing sector and predicted substantial growth in the real estate market as a result.

Dr. Anant Singh Raghuvanshi, President, NAREDCO Mahi, highlighted the association's efforts in promoting policy changes and advocating the interests of the real estate sector, especially focusing on the role of women in driving innovation and growth.
