According to police, top Maoist leader Shankar Rao, who had a bounty of Rs 25 lakh on his head, and Lalitha were killed in the encounter.
Chhattisgarh Police said the death toll could rise as search operations were still ongoing in the densely forested area.
Three security personnel, including two BSF jawans and a District Reserve Guard (DRG) of the state police, were injured in the incident.
The operation was conducted by a joint team of BSF and DRG near Binagunda-Koragutta forest area of Kanker.
“After the encounter, the area was searched which led to the recovery of two bodies along with a large cache of arms and ammunition, including AK-47 rifles,” police said.
