Jammu: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district shut down 25 stone crushers in a major crackdown against illegal mining activities and unauthorized processing of mined material, an official said on Sunday.

The action against stone crushers was initiated by Kathua Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas after conducting physical verification and assessing the functioning of such units operating in the district.

Earlier, a team of the mining department was also deployed at various locations by Minhas from where a large number of complaints of illegal mining and unauthorized transportation of minerals were received, a spokesperson said.

He said that after the site visit, a detailed list of unauthorized stone crushers operating in the district was also prepared and placed before the Deputy Commissioner for action.

The spokesperson said that all these crushers have already been given adequate opportunity of being heard through notices.

Earlier last year, the Deputy Commissioner had closed four crushing units on the request of the Pollution Control Board (PCB).

Furthermore, a communication has been sent to the PCB to take action against the operational crushing units for violating pollution norms, the spokesperson said.

Deputy Commissioner Minhas said that apart from streamlining all the existing stone crushing units in the district, no permission will be given to set up new units and similar instructions have already been given to PCB officials. 6/2/2024 KVK
