MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) successfully launched a massive 25,000-tonne girder connecting the south-bound corridor of Costa Road with the Bandra Worli Sea Link early Friday, the civic body said.

In a release, BMC said the process of launching the bow-string-arch-type girder spanning 136 meters at Worli began at 2 am and was completed at 3.2 pm.

According to the civic body, the engineering feat involving such an installation at sea is the first in India.

The 18 to 21 meter wide girder will connect a 10.5 km stretch of the coastal road to the Bandra-Worli sea link.

The corridor south of the coastal road between Worli and Marine Lines was opened to traffic on March 11 this year, but was not connected to the SE.

“Another 143 meter long, 26-29 meter wide girder of the corridor running north of the coastal road has also been delivered to Nhava Sheva port and its launch is planned by the end of May. Transportation of the second girder will be planned after the launch of the first girder,” BMC had earlier said.

BMC said these girders, painted with anti-rust colors to protect them from salt water and moisture, are being installed to ensure that fishing boats off the Worli coast do not face problems.

“With the success of this first-of-its-kind experiment in India, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has added a new feather to its cap,” the release said.
