Another 30 people are being treated in hospital, none of whom are in danger, according to the province's Meizhou city government, Xinhua news agency reported.
The incident occurred at around 2:10 am on the Meizhou-Dabu Expressway in Meizhou.
Officials said the collapsed portion was 17.9 meters long and spread over an area of 184.3 square metres.
Aerial photographs show that one side of the expressway has caved in, causing vehicles to roll down the slope.
According to officials, the accident did not involve any large vehicles or vehicles transporting hazardous chemicals.
