The prosecution had accused Kumar of being part of the riotous mob that set fire to two houses in Khajuri Khas area during the riots on February 25, 2020.Special Public Prosecutor Naresh Kumar Gaur sought maximum punishment for the convict, saying, "As a society it is our duty to protect the safety of our communities".

"The impact of the crime committed by the convict in this case is not limited to the harm caused to the complainant and other victims. Rather, the acts of the rioters have left a deep scar on the social fabric...The alleged acts have created a sense of insecurity among the people. Has created." It sentenced five years of rigorous imprisonment each with a fine of Rs 50,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively for two incidents of arson at the houses of Mohammed Safil and Mohammed Dawood.The court also sentenced Kumar to one year simple imprisonment under IP section 148 and six months simple imprisonment under IPC section 188.

The court said that the offenses under sections 148 and 188 would run concurrently with the first five-year sentence for the offense of arson.

The Special Public Prosecutor said that for the arson incident, two sentences of five years each will run consecutively.

He said that in cases where an accused is convicted of two or more charges, the general rule under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) provides for running of sentences consecutively, unless the court directs that Such sentences will run concurrently.
