After the six-and-a-half-hour surgery at the hospital, medical superintendent Sankar Chakraborty said a team of doctors successfully transplanted a kidney from Munna Saha Sutradhar to his son, Subham Sutradhar.
"We recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Shija Hospital, Manipur. Under his mentorship, the kidney transplant was successfully carried out," the medical superintendent told the media.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and held a key position in Tripura Medical College and B.R. Ambedkar Memorial University Hospital, another medical college run by the society in Agartala, is personally supervising the process related to the MoU and other processes for transplanting the kidney.
Chakraborty said there are many legal aspects related to such surgery and transplant.
"We have completed all the necessary procedures step by step. The most important thing is that it must be done under the supervision of someone or some hospital. So we started looking for a mentor in the northeast region and selected the hospitals and the Shija Research Institute in Manipur agreed to help us for technical reasons," he added.
He said that the patient along with his parents met Chief Minister Saha during the 'Mukhyamantri Samipesu' (the Chief Minister's weekly meeting with the public) a few weeks ago, after which the doctors were asked to take necessary measures. .
Gulliver Potsangbam, nephrologist at Shija Hospitals in Imphal, who led the 13-member surgical team, said the hospital has completed 114 kidney transplants so far.
