Kolkata: Following the Governor's invitation, two newly elected Trinamool Congress MLAs staged a sit-in at the West Bengal Assembly complex for the sixth day on Thursday demanding that they be administered the oath of office in the House instead of the Raj Bhavan. C V Anand Bose.

Baranagar MLA Sayantika Bandyopadhyay and Bhagabangola MLA Rayat Hussain Sarkar started their protest on June 27 and continued it on June 28, 1, 2, 3 and 4 July.

Despite being declared winners in the assembly by-elections, they are yet to begin their role as elected representatives due to the pending swearing-in process.

Speaker Biman Banerjee, who had earlier sought President Draupadi Murmu's intervention on the matter, will address the press later in the day.

Bandyopadhyay and the government resumed their protest near the statue of BR Ambedkar in the Assembly complex, holding placards reading, "We are waiting for the Governor."

Both the MLAs were elected in the by-elections held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections, but they have refused to take oath at the Raj Bhavan. He argues that tradition dictates that the Governor should appoint the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House to administer the oath in case of by-election winners.

The Governor had invited him to take oath at the Raj Bhavan last Wednesday, which he declined citing procedural norms.
