Mathura (UP), Two people died and 12 others were seriously injured on Sunday after a water tank collapsed in a residential colony here. The officers provided this information.

He said that the incident took place at around 6 pm in Krishna Vihar Colony, developed by Uttar Pradesh Housing Development Council.

The number of casualties was likely to rise as some people, including children, were buried under the debris of the 2.5 lakh liter tank, officials said, adding that some nearby houses also came under the debris.

District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh said that the injured were taken to the district hospital for treatment.

Apart from the fire service and police personnel, revenue, municipal corporation and health department teams are engaged in the rescue operations, the DM said, adding that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have also been called.

Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Yogendra Pandey confirmed that two people have died, but could not give details of the deceased.

He said that the work of removing debris is still going on and many people are still trapped under it.

Two people have died and a dozen have been admitted to hospital, Pandey said.

Dr. Bhudev Prasad, in-charge of the Rapid Response Team of the Health Department, said that initially four injured were rescued from the debris, but now this number has reached a dozen. He said that there is a possibility that more people are still trapped under the debris.

The DM said that the construction of the water tank was completed in 2021 and an inquiry will be conducted into its collapse in just three years.

He also said that the tank was constructed by the Jal Nigam under the Ganga Water Drinking Water Project at a cost of Rs 6 crore.
