Two students from India, studying in a university in London, UK, died in a tragic incident of drowning in a beautiful waterfall in Scotland.

Police Scotland have not yet named the 20-year-old from Andhra Pradesh and a post-mortem is due to take place on Friday.

The incident happened at Tummel's Lynn, near Blair of Atholl in Perthshire on Wednesday night when two people from a group of friends fell into the water and ended up in trouble.

After his friends raised the alarm to the emergency services the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent boat teams and ships to assist in the rescue efforts.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 7pm on Wednesday, April 17, we received reports of two men, aged 2 and 26, in the water at the Lynn of Tummel waterfall near Blair Atholl.,

“Emergency services attended and following a search of the area, the bodies of two people were recovered from the water. “Inquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances, however there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding these deaths,” the spokesperson said.

Police said a report into the incident would be submitted to the Scottish Prosecution Service and the Procuratorate Fiscal, the death investigation body.

The Indian High Commission in London said that two students from Andhra Pradesh "drowned in an unfortunate incident" and their bodies were found slightly downstream.

The Consulate General of India in Edinburgh is in touch with their families and a consular official has also met a UK-based relative of the student.“The University of Dundee has assured all possible help. A statement from the High Commission said the post-mortem is expected to be conducted on April 19 and thereafter the process of repatriating the body to India will be completed.

A spokesperson for the University of Dundee said: “This is a tragic accident which has shocked us all, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of the students. We are providing support to those families and friends during this extremely difficult time.''
