Parts of Kariega town, north of Gkebarha town within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in the province, are currently underwater due to heavy rains on Saturday.

According to the report of Xinhua news agency, due to heavy rains, houses have been flooded, vehicles have been washed away and there has been power failure in some areas.

"The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is experiencing persistent adverse weather conditions, which has resulted in flooding in parts of Gkeberha and large parts of Kariega," the municipal government said in a statement on Sunday morning.

“Two Joint Operation Centers (JOCs) have been activated at Gkeberha and Kariega,” it said.

"There have also been power cuts across the metro due to adverse conditions."

Meanwhile, according to the South African National Rescue Institute (NSRI), several rescue operations are underway and people have been evacuated from buildings, residences and vehicles.

In one incident on Sunday morning, a security officer reported a vehicle stranded in the flooded Breck River in Rocklands, with six people trapped inside. A male was successfully rescued from an island in the river, while an adult female was swept into the river and is missing.

Fortunately, "the remaining four of these six people were recovered safely on the southern bank of the river," the NSRI said.

In a separate statement issued on Sunday, the Eastern Cape provincial government said that "emergency services have been working throughout the night and are still searching and assisting those affected by the floods".
