ISLAMABAD: At least 18 dangerous criminals, including six on death row, escaped from a prison in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after overpowering the guard. Officials gave this information on Monday.

The incident took place on Friday when an inmate of Rawalakot jail used a pistol to attack the jail guard demanding keys.

According to a police officer, of the 18 prisoners who escaped, six were on death row and the other three were serving life imprisonment.

Another prisoner was shot dead during an escape and was serving a five-year sentence, the official said.

Police have started a massive search operation in the area.

Meanwhile, the authorities have started investigating the incident and have dismissed the jail chief and some other officials. Police said some officers have been arrested for questioning.

According to Sama TV, seven officials, including the deputy superintendent of Rawalkot jail, have been detained and an investigation into the security breach has been launched.

In response to the security lapse, all prisons in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have been put on high alert. The government has requested a judicial commission to investigate the circumstances of the escape, the report said.
