Dantewada: 18 Naxalites, including a militia platoon section commander and three women, surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada on Wednesday, a senior police officer said.

Dantewada Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai said that Hidma Oyam (34) was working as Hurrepal Panchayat Militia Platoon (HPMP Section Commander).

The three women have been identified as Sambati Oyam (23) who was working as the deputy commander of the HPMP, Gangi Madakam (28), of the Kakadi Panchay Krantikari Mahila Adivasi Sangathan (KAMS) of the banned CPI (Maoist). Vice President and Hung Oyam (20), a member of Hurrepal Panchayat.

Rai said, "18 Naxalites laid down their arms before the police and CRPF officials. They were part of the Bhairamgarh and Malanger area committees of the Maoists in South Bastar."

He said the Naxalites surrendered themselves because they were impressed by the police's rehabilitation campaign 'Lone Varatu' and were disappointed with the hollow Maoist ideology.

The SP said, "These cadres were tasked with digging roads, cutting trees to block roads and putting up posters and banners during the bandh called by Naxalites. They will be provided facilities as per the surrender and rehabilitation policy of the government "

Officials said that with this, so far 738 Naxalites have joined the mainstream in Dantewada district, out of which 177 Naxalites were carrying rewards on their heads.

Security forces have started action against Naxalites in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected districts of Chhattisgarh.

The highest number of Naxalites were killed in a single encounter in the history of the state's fight against leftist extremism on April 16, when security forces killed 29 Naxalites in Kanker district.
