A total of 150 complete electronic voting machine (EVM) sets were replaced due to malfunction in five Lok Sabha seats in Guwahati, Assam, where voting is taking place on Friday. The officers provided this information.



Apart from this, more than 400 components like VVPAT and ballot units of various EVMs were also replaced due to malfunction.



A senior election department official said most of the irregularities were noticed during mock polling, which began 9 minutes before the actual polling began, and those machines were replaced accordingly.



He said, “After the actual polling began, six EVMs with complete sets were replaced, besides 40 more VVPATs at various polling stations.,



An EVM consists of three components – Control Unit (CU), Voter Verifiable Paper Audio Trail (VVPAT) and Ballot Unit (BU).



The official said that 150 complete sets of EVMs were replaced after irregularities occurred during the mock poll.



"Apart from the entire set, 140 CUs, 230 VVPATs and 81 BUs were also replaced individually with different machines in the constituencies," he said.

However, the official refused to share details of how many EVMs malfunctioned in which constituency.



Another official said reports of EVM malfunctioning came from at least three polling stations in Bihpuria in Lakhimpur, one each in Hojai, Kaliabor and Bokakhat and one in Naharkatiya in Dibrugarh.He said, "Polling at Jorbil Baniya LP School booth in Majuli started late by an hour as the EVMs stopped working and polling started after the arrival of the new machine. Voting at two more polling booths in Majuli was delayed by one hour due to malfunction. There was a delay of more than an hour."



Similarly, there was a delay of about an hour at three polling stations in Mariani due to failure of three EVM sets, the official said.



The total number of polling stations in the first phase is 10,001, of which 9 are model polling stations, 11 PWD-managed and 752 women-run stations.Webcasting is being done at 5,509 polling stations.
