At least 15 people died and more than 19,000 people from more than 5,000 families were left homeless over the weekend due to heavy monsoon rains in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Officials gave this information on Sunday.

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) said the deaths were reported from seven districts, including the capital Colombo, where torrential rains of more than 300 mm caused flash floods, uprooted trees, strong winds, lightning and landslides.

20 out of 25 administrative districts have been badly affected due to rain.

Over 4,000 houses sustained partial damage, while 28 houses were completely destroyed.

The Sri Lankan Army has mobilized seven teams equipped with boats for rescue operations. The Air Force has kept three helicopters on standby for immediate emergency response in the affected areas.

Due to the threat of further rain and flooding, the Ministry of Education has announced the closure of all schools across the island for Monday.

As a precautionary measure, the Ministry of Power and Energy has suspended power supply in many areas.

The National Building Research Center issued a red notice for landslides for four districts.
