Matome Chiloane, executive council member for education, sports, arts, culture and recreation in Gauteng province, said on Wednesday that a minibus carrying students was hit from behind by a pickup truck, causing it to overturn and kill about 6 people. It caught fire at: 45 am local time.

Chiloen said 11 students were from Rocklands Primary School and one from Laerskool Blivuoruitsig in Carletonville, Xinhua news agency reported.

"I am deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Losing our children is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners," he said in a statement. "We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and entire community of both schools during this incredibly difficult time. We also wish all the injured learners a speedy recovery."

Chiloen said all students and staff members will be provided counseling services to help them cope with the tragedy.
