Lucknow, 13 newly elected members of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council took oath at Vidhan Bhavan on Friday.

After the newly elected MLCs took oath in the 100-member Upper House, the Samajwadi Party's strength has increased to 10, and it now qualifies for the post of Leader of Opposition in the House.

On 14 March, 13 candidates were declared elected unopposed in the biennial elections to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council – ten candidates from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and three candidates from the Samajwadi Party.

Earlier the SP was not eligible for the LOP post as it did not have the required number of MLCs. The BJP-led NDA has an overwhelming majority in the Legislative Council as well as in the UP Assembly.

Principal Secretary of UP Legislative Council Rajesh Singh said that now SP has the necessary strength for the post of LOP.

On Friday evening, UP Legislative Council Chairman Kunwar Manvendra Singh administered the oath of membership to 13 newly elected members at Tilak Hall of Vidhan Bhawan.

The MLCs who took oath include Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Dr Mahendra Singh, Vijay Bahadur Pathak, Ashok Kataria, Ramtirth Singhal, Santosh Singh, Dharmendra Singh and Mohit Beniwal.

NDA ally Ashish Patel of Apna Dal (S), Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP)'s Vichelal and Yogesh Choudhary of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) also took oath.

Samajwadi Party's Balram Yadav, Shah Alam and Kiran Pal Kashyap also took oath at Vidhan Bhavan.
