Thane, the Thane civic body and the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) on Thursday razed 13 illegal bars and more than 30 paan shops, a day after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led action against joints selling substances toxic in the wake of the Pune bar case. officials said.

In Thane city, eight unauthorized bars and pubs and 31 paan shops were shut down for operating without permission, the civic corporation said in a statement. The campaign will continue unabated, he said.

Similar actions were carried out within the borders of neighboring MBMC. Civic chief Rajesh Katkar said five illegal bars were demolished and more will face action on Friday.

In Kalyan, civic chief Indurani Jakhad directed the corporation staff to act against illegal bars and pubs, officials said.

A large number of police were deployed at the places where the campaigns were being carried out, officials said. Excavators and JCB machines were involved in the operation, they said.

CM Shinde on Wednesday directed municipal and police commissioners of Thane and neighboring Mira Bhayandar municipality to bulldoze and demolish all illegal bars and pubs as well as properties engaged in drug-related activities in their jurisdictions.

Acting on his instructions, Thane Municipal Corporation commissioner Saurabh Rao launched the demolition drive in the city, a TMC official said.

The CM has said that narcotics consumption has a negative impact on the younger generation and to curb this menace, strict measures need to be taken.

Earlier this week, the Pune Municipal Corporation started cracking down on unauthorized structures in pubs and bars in the city. The action was taken following violations related to hours at the Liquid Leisure Lounge (L3) bar and alleged drug use at the establishment on Sunday.

Police arrested eight people, including an event organiser, and suspended four police officers after the L3 pub was found to be operating beyond the permitted time limit. Additionally, the state excise office arrested half a dozen L3 bartenders for allegedly violating regulations related to serving alcoholic beverages.
