Bijapur: At least 12 Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Friday, Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sa said.

Police had earlier said that the encounter took place in the forest near Pidiya village under Gangalur police station area when a team of security personnel was on an anti-Naxal operation.

"The firing has ended in Gangalur area. Our security forces have got a major success as bodies of 12 Naxalites have been recovered so far," the Chief Minister told reporters.

He congratulated the security forces and senior officials for the operation.

This is the third major setback for Naxalites in Chhattisgarh in the last one month. At least 29 Naxalites were killed in an encounter in Kanke district on 16 April, while ten Naxalites were killed in another encounter with security forces on the border of Narayanpur and Kanker districts on 30 April.

So far this year, 103 Naxalites have been killed in different encounters in Bastar area of ​​the state.
