In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, 12 members of various royal families are seeking votes of the common people in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

His grandfather A N Singhdev was elected as MLA from Surda constituency four times – 1967, 1971, 1977 and 1995 – and as MP from Aska Lok Sabha constituency in 1989. His mother Nandini Devi had won from Sanakhemundi seat in 2014. BJD has also fielded Chinmayanand Shrirup Deb, son of Usha Devi, a member of the royal family of Chikiti, to contest elections from Chikiti assembly constituency.

Shrirup Deb, son of Urban Development Minister Usha Devi, is the third member of the Chikiti royal family to make his electoral debut from his mother's seat, Chikiti.His grandfather Sachidanand Dev was elected from this seat in 1971, while his mother Usha Devi won five times. Continuously since 2000.Deb worked in a multinational IT company for more than two decades and started his own business after leaving the job.

"I have also been working in politics with my mother since 2018," said Deb, 48. Her aim to enter politics is to provide service to the people and make Chiquity an ideal constituency. BJP Its MP Sangeeta Kumari Singh Dev has been made a candidate again from Bolangir Lok Sabha seat.Her husband, senior BJ leader KV Singh Dev, has also been fielded by the saffron party from Patnagarh assembly constituency.

Sangeeta has already been elected from Bolangir Lok Sabha seat four times.

BJD has fielded two-time MP from Bolangir Kalesh Narayan Singh Dev to contest from the assembly constituency this time. The saffron party has fielded Malvika Keshari Dev, wife of former MP Ark Keshari Dev, from Kalahandi Lok Sabha seat. After being denied the ticket in 2019, the royal couple joined the BJP after quitting BJD in 2022.Arka is a scion of the Kalahandi royal family and son of BJP leader Bikram Keshari Dev, who had won the seat thrice.

BJD has also fielded Bamanda 'Rani' Arundhati Devi, wife of former Deoghar king and BJP's Sambalpur MP Nitish Ganga Dev, as its Deoghar assembly candidate.

Another member of the royal family, Pushpendra Singh Deo, has been fielded by BJ from Dharamgarh assembly seat. BJD has also fielded Sanjukta Singh to contest from Angul assembly constituency. She replaced her husband and sitting MLA Rajnikant Singh, who is a scion of the Angul royal family.The regional outfit has also fielded Pratyusha Rajeshwari from Nayagar Assembly constituency, while Aul Shahi family member Pratap Deb will contest from Aul seat for BJD.

The Congress has fielded Susmita Singh Dev, a member of the Dhenkanal Roy family, from the Dhenkanal assembly seat. Political analyst Prahlad Sinha said the royal family still appreciates respect from the villagers. People still believe that the members of the royal family will solve their problems and raise their issues at the appropriate place.

However, Bolangir royal family member and senior BJP leader KV Singh Deo said, “I was never considered a member of the royal family.People have showered their love and affection on me and my wife, who has been elected to the Lok Sabha four times."
