Aizawl: Twelve people were killed and several others missing after a stone quarry collapsed in Mizoram's Aizawl district on Tuesday morning amid incessant rains due to the impact of Cyclone Ramal. The officers provided this information.

The incident took place around 6 am in the morning in the area between Meltham and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of Aizawl city, he said.

"Twelve bodies have been recovered so far, while several others are feared still trapped under the debris," Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kuma said.

“We are searching for more bodies,” he said.“The operation will continue until we vacate the entire site.”

Director General of Police (DGP) Anil Shukla said that due to heavy rains, rescue work at the disaster site is being affected.

He said the rains also led to landslides at several other places in the state and at least two people were swept away.

Another police officer said that those killed in the stone mine collapse included a four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl.

“We have also rescued two people alive from the spot,” he said.

Three people went missing after a landslide washed away a building in Salem Veng, Aizawl.An officer said that a search is going on for him.

The state capital has been cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 in Hunthar, officials said.

Besides, several inter-state highways have also been disrupted by landslides, he said.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those killed in rain-related disasters, including mine collapse.

He handed over checks of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of eight Mizos killed in the mine collapse and said the remaining amount would also be given to them soon.Home Minister K Sapdanga said, "The identities of the four non-tribal people are being verified. Lalduhoma said the government has earmarked Rs 15 crore to deal with the disaster caused by the rains, which came as an impact of Cyclone Remal.Later, Lalduhoma along with Sapdanga, who also holds the disaster management and rehabilitation department, visited the stone quarry site to take stock of the situation and monitor the rescue operations.

Due to the rain, all schools were closed and government employees, except those providing essential services, were asked to work from home.

Meanwhile, more than 30 families have been shifted to safer places due to unprecedented flooding in the Talwang river at Sairang village, about 21 km from Aizawl, a senior official said.

He said, “Many farms along the river bank have been completely submerged in water. The water level is continuously rising.However, no casualties have been reported."

In Aizawl city, some cemeteries were also washed away by landslides, with more than 150 graves damaged.
