Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], The onset of the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh has caused major disruption across the state, with heavy rains leading to the closure of more than 115 roads and disruption of 212 power supply systems.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has reported these figures since the monsoon began on June 27, 2024.

In a statement, Onkar Chand Sharma, additional chief secretary, government of Himachal Pradesh, provided an update on the current situation.

"The monsoon approached Himachal Pradesh on June 27, 2024 and rains were recorded across the state. So far, 115 roads have been closed due to heavy rains and 212 electrical transformers have been affected, making it difficult electricity supply. In addition, 17 water supply systems have been interrupted," he stated.

Sharma emphasized that the government has taken proactive measures to manage the situation. "We have prepared and positioned men, material and machinery in various locations. We are making efforts to clear the roads as quickly as possible."

The monsoon rains have also caused a tragic loss of life: almost 20 people have died in various accidents over the past week. However, it is important to note that these deaths were not due to flooding or rain-related incidents. The estimated financial loss in the state has reached Rs one crore so far.

Sharma urged tourists to exercise caution and comply with local advisories. "I appeal to all tourists visiting the state to follow the recommendations of the regional administration and avoid visiting rivers and streams. Even during the summer, more than thirty people drowned in the state."

Reflecting on last year's extreme weather, Sharma highlighted the government's preparedness. "Last year there was 400% more rainfall in the state, but thanks to the pre-positioning of men, material and machinery we were able to save lives. The India Meteorological Department has predicted a normal monsoon this year, and we hope not to face any weather conditions extremes. However, the government and the state administration are prepared for any eventuality.

As the monsoon continues, residents and visitors are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
