KARACHI: At least 11 workers died of suffocation on Monday at the Sanjadi coal mine area outside Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's Balochistan province. An officer gave this information.

Abdul Ghani, the province's chief mine inspector, confirmed that 11 workers at the mine died of suffocation after the mine filled with deadly methane gas and collapsed.

Sanjadi is about 40 kilometers from Quetta.

"All the workers were from Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and their bodies have been recovered and will be sent to their hometowns for burial," Ghani said.

Mining in Pakistan is notorious for its dangerous working conditions.
