Aizawl: A total of 108 people died of tuberculosis in Mizoram last year, officials said on Wednesday.

He said that last year, blood samples of 17,432 people were tested and 2,272 of them were found to be suffering from TB.

Of the 2,272 patients, 164 were diagnosed with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), he said, adding that 86 per cent of the patients were successfully treated, while 108 died.

Out of 3,761 samples tested between January and March this year, a total of 595 people were diagnosed with TB.

Of them, 38 were found to be suffering from MDR-TB and 57 were found to be suffering from both TB and HIV-AIDS, officials said.

He said that 6 percent of the patients are diabetic, 33 percent consume tobacco and 16 percent are alcoholics.

So far this year, Aizawl district has reported the highest number of TB cases at 433, followed by Kolasib district (46) and Lunglei district (34).

Mamit district in western Mizoram recorded the least number of TB cases at five.

Only 187 people in the state have registered to adopt or donate to TB patients through the 'Nikshay' platform under the PM TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

The initiative was launched by President Draupadi Murmu in September 2022, with the aim of enhancing community participation in meeting India's commitment to eliminate TB by 2025, ahead of the global target of 2030.
