In a big boost to new entrepreneurs and non-governmental entities (NGOs) in the space sector, Prime Minister Modi's government announced in the Union Budget a Rs 1,000-crore venture capital fund to promote space technology. The plan is part of the government's continued emphasis on expanding the space economy five-fold over the next 10 years.

The government also celebrated the first National Space Day on August 23 to commemorate the success of Chandrayaan.

In a significant step towards fostering a culture of research and innovation, the Lok Sabha in July passed the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) Bill, 2023. The bill, introduced by the Minister of Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, aims to set up a fund of Rs 50,000. crore fund to “seed, grow and promote” research and development in Indian academic institutions.

The first meeting of the ANRF board of directors, chaired by Prime Minister Modi, focused on a discussion on India's science and technology landscape and redesign of research and development programmes.

In another major move to boost science and technology, the Union Cabinet merged three umbrella schemes into a unified central sector scheme titled 'Vigyan Dhara' under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), with an outlay of 10,579, 84 crores. The unified scheme has three broad components; research and development; and innovation, development and deployment of technology.

The country also witnessed the successful launch of an Earth observation satellite (EOS-08) on the new Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) rocket mission.

The government has also created a national database for disaster management and a Bhuvan Panchayat portal for rural land records. The portal will support spatial information for decentralized planning and empower citizens at the grassroots level in Panchayats.
