A team from Denmark's Rigshospitalet found that many people live with serious manifestations of atherosclerosis, such as heart attack or stroke.

This condition represents not only a significant burden for these individuals, but also a heavy burden on health care systems and societies worldwide.

"Atherosclerosis can develop from an early age and is often 'silent' without any symptoms for many years, until it occurs suddenly, e.g. For heart attack." In Rigshospitalet.

The researchers said the risk of atherosclerosis is currently measured by blood pressure, cholesterol levels, age and lifestyle.

Led by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the team aims to develop early detection and prevention methods.

"We hope to identify new means to detect atherosclerosis at an earlier age, that is, during the 'silent' period," said Dr. Bundgaard.

In a new study, they aim to incorporate imaging of the arteries in the neck and groin and coronary arteries, as well as genetic analysis and blood testing, in a study of 16,000 individuals aged 20-70.
