It is reported that this tragic accident occurred, involving seven crew members. The members, still unaccounted for, crashed about 270 kilometers east of Torishima Island in the Izu island chain during nighttime anti-submarine exercises. The Izu island chain, where the crash occurred, is located south of Tokyo, Japan's Defense Minister Minoru Kihara told media The helicopters reportedly collided with each other, resulting in the crash, according to T-Kyodo News. The defense minister also said that two flight recorders were also found in "extremely close locations" and debris from other aircraft was also found during the search after the crash. Following the incident, MSDF training involving SH-60K helicopters will be suspended, he said, according to Kyodo News. Each carrying four crew members, the SH-60K helicopters lost contact at 10:3 p.m. and 11:04 p.m. on Saturday, the two helicopters were from Omura Air Base in Nagasaki Prefecture and Komatsushima Air Base in Tokushima Prefecture, respectively.
