This includes 12,730 government school students who have availed free NEE coaching conducted by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department.

Salem district tops the list of government school students attending NEET coaching with 992, while Karur has the lowest number at 71.

There were several protests against the conduct of NEE in Tamil Nadu over the years, with many students sacrificing their lives after failing in NEET. Some students committed suicide due to fear of writing the examination.

In Tamil Nadu, an estimated 24 students committed suicide due to NEET since the introduction of NEET in 2017.

NEET has been a persistent issue in Tamil Nadu and the exam is considered anti-poor and discriminatory against students from government schools and rural backgrounds.

In 2023, after the NEET results were out, a 19-year-old boy, Jagateshwaran, committed suicide after not getting a seat in a government medical college despite scoring 400 marks in the exam. His father Selvasekar too, unable to bear his son's grief, died the next day by consuming poison.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had then said that the DMK and the Tamil Nadu government had always been opposed to NEET and had told students that NEET could be abolished in the future. Condoling the death of the father and son, Stalin said, "Tamil Nadu government is taking steps to abolish NEET and students should not take any extreme step out of fear of the exam."

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts NEET, has said that 2 lakh students are appearing for the exam in 557 cities across the country and 14 cities outside India.
