New Delhi [India]: Dr Yazdi Maneksha Italia, the microbiologist who led the development of India's first sickle cell anemia control program of the Gujarat government, was on Monday honored with the Padma Shri award, among the 21 contributors to the consultation module on Italia Sickle Cell. Speaking to ANI after receiving the award by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which aims to eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047, Italia said it was her work that was called "my identity". The work has been given the Padma Shri award, not Italy, I must say that we are working in a tribal area and sickle cell anemia is a tribal health problem which is transmitted from parents to children due to treatment. Italy said, “This is also different. We have been doing it for 4 years. Now the government has implemented it for the country and by 2047 we will have zero sickle cell anemia patients." Six people from Gujarat honored with Padma awards, including interventional cardiologist Dr Tejas Patel President Draupadi Murmu conferred 3 Padma Vibhushan, 8 Padma Bhushan and 5 Padma Shri awards for the year 2024 at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-I Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers and other dignitaries were present on the occasion in the Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Shah interacted with the Padma awardees at a dinner hosted by the Home Minister at his residence in New Delhi. He will also visit the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Prime Minister's Museum tomorrow morning.Awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of a high order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service). This award seeks to recognize achievements. In all fields of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved, Padma Awards are conferred on the recommendations of the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted every year by the Prime Minister. The awards committee is chaired by the Cabinet Secretary and also includes the Home Minister. The Secretary, Secretary to the President and four to six eminent persons are the members.
