New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested a 57-year-old man who allegedly murdered a woman here 17 years ago, locked her body in a trunk and fled. Officials gave this information on Tuesday.

The person was arrested from Rohini area of ​​the city.

Police said the accused, Virendra Singh, a resident of Bihar's Vaishali district, killed the 22-year-old woman in his rented apartment in 2007 and locked the body in a trunk. The body was found the next day.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amit Goyal said, "After killing her, the accused fled the city. However, during investigation, co-accused Shankar Ghosh was arrested by the local police." in 2008.

The officer further said that an assistant sub-inspector of the crime branch was posted at Kalkaji police station. He was the beat officer of the area where the women were murdered.

"Despite transfer they continued investigating the case. They again started gathering information about the accused through people who were directly or indirectly involved in prostitution. They came to know that Singh was living in Panipat, Haryana. Is hidden.Raids were conducted but the accused could not be traced as he was frequently changing his rented accommodation,” the DCP said.

In February, ASI Ramesh was transferred to the crime branch and started investigating the case again.

"This time he was successful in finding the mobile number of the accused and identified him from the tenants' database. He was caught from Vijay Viha area of ​​Rohini," the DCP said.

During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused came to Delhi in 1991 and started living in Chittaranjan Park area.He used to work as a taxi driver.

During that time he came in contact with different people and also came to know about prostitution.

In 2001, he got involved in prostitution to earn easy money, the DCP said, adding that he used to bring young girls from West Bengal and use them in prostitution.

“He had bought the victim for Rs 10,000,” the officer said.

On June 4, 2007, when the victim refused to go to work due to illness, the accused allegedly murdered her, locked the body in a trunk, hid the trunk in his rented house and drove to West Bengal. Bengal fled, the DCP said. He stayed in a woman's house in Siliguri.

The body was found the next day.

“In 2009, he came to Ambala and got involved in prostitution along with his friend Labhu.In 2013, he shifted to Panipat and continued the same business. He came back to Delhi in 2019 and started living in Vijay Vihar,” the DCP said.
