New Delhi, Agriculture Ministry said on Monday that so far in the current 2024-25 Kharif (summer) season, the area under sowing of paddy has increased by 19.35 percent to 59.99 lakh hectares.

In the same period a year ago, the area under paddy was 50.26 lakh hectares.

Sowing of the main kharif crop paddy begins in June with the onset of the south-west monsoon, and harvesting occurs from September.

Besides, the area under sowing of pulses also increased to 36.81 lakh hectares in the current season till July 8 from 23.78 lakh hectares in the same period last year, the ministry said in a statement.

There was a significant increase in the coverage of 'Arhar', which increased from 4.09 lakh hectares to 20.82 lakh hectares. The area under sowing of urad was 5.37 lakh hectares as compared to 3.67 lakh hectares.

However, the area under coarse cereals and 'Shri Anna' (millet) declined to 58.48 lakh hectares from 82.08 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

Among coarse grains, the area of ​​maize increased from 30.22 lakh hectares to 41.09 lakh hectares.

So far in this Kharif season, the area under sowing of oilseeds has increased rapidly to 80.31 lakh hectares, which was 51.97 lakh hectares in the year-ago period.

Among cash crops, area sown under sugarcane increased marginally to 56.88 lakh hectares from 55.45 lakh hectares, area under cotton increased from 62.34 lakh hectares to 80.63 lakh hectares, while area under jute-mesta decreased by 5.63 lakh hectares from 6.02 lakh hectares. Stayed.

The total area under sowing of all Kharif crops increased by 14 percent to 378.72 lakh hectares, compared to 331.90 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

Although the monsoon reached Kerala early, its progress has been slow so far, with many areas receiving below normal rainfall. However, the India Meteorological Department has forecast above average rainfall for the entire June–September monsoon season.
