Aizawl: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said the Center has decided to erect fencing along the India-Myanmar border and end the Free Movement Regime (FMR) as the government gives top priority to the country's security.

He said this while talking to journalists after releasing the BJP manifesto in Aizawl.

Thousands of people from Myanmar have taken refuge in various north-eastern states, especially Mizoram, after fleeing their country following the military coup in February 2021.

“I think for the security of our country, for the security of our states including Mizoram, we need to take certain precautions. But the precautions we are taking right now are in response to a certain situation.Even at this time our neighbor is going through very difficult times. Difficult times. If things were normal in Myanmar, this would not have happened,” Jaishankar said.

He said the Center is very sensitive to the traditions, customs and interests of the people and cross-border relationships.

Talking about the proposed border fencing and scrapping of FMR, he said, “At the moment it is important that we exercise caution. So we don't want people to think that this is a response to the situation today."

The Center in February decided to fence the India-Myanmar border and end the free movement arrangement (FRM) between the two countries.

FMR allows people living close to the India-Myanmar border to travel up to 1 km into each other's territory without a visa.

India shares a 1,643 km long border with Myanmar and Mizoram, notably a 510 km long border with the neighboring country.

The Mizoram government, civil society organizations and student bodies have strongly opposed the Centre's decision to erect a fence along the India-Myanmar border and remove the FM as they believe it will "disrupt close contacts between the ethnic communities of the two countries". Will do.,

The Mizo people share ethnic ties with the Chin people.

The Mizoram Assembly had on February 28 passed a resolution protesting against the Centre's decision to erect fencing along the India-Myanmar border and scrapping the FMR.

Earlier, Chief Minister Lalduhoma had said that his government strongly opposed the idea of fencing the international border and scrapping the FMR, but the Mizoram government would have no right to oppose the Center if it went ahead with its plan. Not there.
