Moscow, Top sources said on Tuesday that Russia has widely heeded India's call to end the recruitment of Indians as support staff in the Russian army and ensure the return of those still serving in the force.

It is learned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the issue during an informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin last night.

Russia's decision to fire all Indians working as support staff in the Russian army is expected to be announced after the summit between Modi and Putin on Tuesday.

Sources said, Russia has broadly agreed to our request on this issue.

Last month, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said two more Indian nationals serving in the Russian army were killed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, taking the number of such deaths to four.

Following the death of the two Indians, New Delhi demanded a "verifiable halt" on further recruitment of Indian citizens by the Russian military.

The Ministry of External Affairs had also said that the issue of Indian citizens serving in the Russian army remains a matter of "utmost concern" and sought action from Moscow on it.

In March this year, 30-year-old Hyderabad resident Mohammed Asfan died of injuries sustained while serving with Russian troops on the front lines with Ukraine.

In February, Hemal Ashvinbhai Mangua, 23, from Surat, Gujarat, died in a Ukrainian airstrike while serving as a "security assistant" in the Donetsk region.
