Mumbai: Two runways of Mumbai International Airport will remain closed for six hours on May 9 for pre-monsoon maintenance work.

Airport operator MIAL (Mumbai International Airport Limited) said in a release on Monday that both runways will remain closed for six hours from 11:00 am to 17:00 pm on May 9.

"As part of the Monsoon Contingency Plan of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Primary Runway 09/27 and Secondary Runway 14/32 will remain temporarily non-operational till 9 May 2024 for pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work " The release said.

A NOTAM (notice to airmen) has already been issued to airlines and other stakeholders in December to plan for rescheduling of flights ahead of time.

"Therefore, the maintenance and repair work on the runway will not impact any flight movement or cause inconvenience to passengers," the release said.

The airport has a network of runways, taxiways and aprons spread over approximately 1,033 acres.

According to the release, the annual runway maintenance work includes inspection of the runway surface for micro-texture and macro-texture wear and tear that may occur due to day-to-day operations and helps strengthen the airside strip.

The airport handles around 950 flight movements daily. Runway 09/27 extends to 3,448 m x 60 m, and Runway 14/32 extends to 2,871 m x 45 m.
