An angry lover hit his girlfriend 18 times on the head with a spanner on a road in Palghar (Maharashtra), Vasai, on Friday, killing her, while many people watched the horrifying spectacle.

“The accused attacked the woman with an industrial spanner. There were 18 wounds on his body,” said Jayaraj Ranavare, senior inspector of Waliv police station.

Police said that Rohit Yadav (32) and the woman Aarti Yadav (22) were neighbors and were in a relationship for the last few years. Recently, he had stopped contacting her and she suspected that he was having an affair with someone else.“Why did you do this to me,” the man kept saying and kept attacking her lifeless body with the spanner. Police said CCTV footage of the incident showed a large crowd watching the attack, but no one intervened to help the woman as the man repeatedly hit her on the head with a spanner.

Waliv police have registered a case of murder and arrested the accused.

A video of the attack, which took place around 8.30 am in Chinchpada area of ​​Vasai, surfaced on social media.

Police said the victim and the man lived in the same neighborhood and worked in an industrial estate.An officer said that she was going to work on Friday morning when the attacker attacked her and started attacking her after a fight.

The man continued to attack her even after she fell on the road. He did not run away from the spot and remained sitting near the body, the officer said.

A team of Valiv police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.

Police have also detained a man and a woman who made videos of the attack and uploaded them on social media.Aarti Yadav's sister claimed that her family had complained to the police about the person who beat up the victim on Saturday, but the police did not register their complaint.

Speaking to the media, she said that the man had tried to attack her sister earlier also.
