Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday hinted that he may contest the Channapatna Assembly bypoll, saying he owes a "debt" to the people of the constituency.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Karnataka, Shivakumar said, "Channapatna is in my heart. It was part of the erstwhile Sathanur assembly constituency, which I represented. My political career actually started from there. The people of Channapatna You have been there for me in difficult times and I owe you a debt."

The Channapatna bypoll was necessitated after its representative, Janata Dal Secular (JDS) leader and now Union minister HD Kumaraswamy was elected to the Lok Sabha in the recent elections.

Karnataka Deputy CM said, "There is an opportunity to develop Channapatna in the same way I have developed Kanakapura. I am visiting temples in the constituency and discussing with local leaders and voters, after contesting the elections. I will decide."

With his brother D.K. Asked about the possibility of Suresh contesting from Channapatna, he said, "It has not been finalised."

Suresh was fielded from Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha constituency. However, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI), he lost to CN Manjunath of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 2,69,647 votes.

Kumaraswamy of JD(S) represented Channapatna Assembly in 2018 and 2023. Shivakumar, on the other hand, has been representing the Kanakapura constituency since 2008.

Earlier today, DK Shivakumar visited Raghavendra Math and Kotte Sri Varadarajaswamy Temple in Channapatnam.

On 'X' he wrote, "Today I visited Raghavendra Math and Kote Sri Varadarajaswamy Temple in Channapatna, did puja, had darshan of the Lord and prayed for everyone's well-being."
