Due to heavy rains in Nepal, the water level of Narayani (also known as Gandaki) river has increased to 5.71 cusecs at Dev Ghat in Nepal, hence water has been released from there. After this it has affected Gandak. The result was that the Water Resources Department discharged 4.28 lakh cusecs of water from Valmiki Nagar Gandak Barrage on Saturday night.

The increased water level has caused water to enter the Valmiki Nagar Tiger Reserve, threatening both human population and wildlife.

Water has also entered Bairagi and Sonbarsa panchayat areas, forcing officials to advise residents to move to safer places.

“Due to the sudden rise in water level we have released 4.28 lakh cusecs of water from Valmiki Nagar Gandak Barrage. All 36 gates of the barrage were opened to control the water pressure,” said Naval Kishore Bharti, superintendent engineer of Valmiki Nagar Gandak Barrage.

“The water resources department and the district administration are on high alert. We are monitoring the embankments and using loudspeakers to warn residents and guide them to move to higher places,” Bharti said.

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in Madhubani, Supaul, Katihar, Kishanganj and Araria districts of North Bihar, which may increase the risk of floods.

Authorities are working diligently to manage the situation and ensure the safety of both human and animal populations in the affected areas.
