Mumbai: Equity benchmark indices rose in early trade on Wednesday in line with a strong trend in global markets and buying in Reliance Industries and ITC.

In early trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 212.21 points to 74,165.52. NSE Nifty rose 48.35 points to 22,577.40.

Among Sensex companies, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Hindustan Unilever, Asia Paints, Nestle and ITC were the major gainers.

State Bank of India, Power Grid, JSW Steel and Mahindra & Mahindra were among the laggards.

In Asian markets, Seoul, Shanghai and Hong Kong were trading in positive territory while Tokyo was quoted lower.

Wall Street closed in the green on Tuesday.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude fell 0.69 percent to US$82.31 per barrel.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 1,874.5 crore on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the BSE benchmark closed at 73,953.3, down 52.63 points or 0.07 per cent. However, Nifty closed 27.05 points or 0.12 per cent higher at 22,529.05.
