Kolkata, West Bengal On Tuesday, a young patient, who was declared brain dead at the state government-run SSKM hospital in Kolkata, received two organs - a heart and lungs - from the same donor, doctors said.

Arun Kumar Kole, 52, a farmer by profession, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital, was declared brain dead on Sunday night, the source said.

"The complex transplant of both the organs of the young patient began on Monday evening. It was carried out by a team of doctors at SSKM hospital. After the surgery ended this morning, he has been kept under observation," a doctor said.

The transplant took place at the Institute of Post-Graduate Medica Education and Research, SSKM Hospital.

On May 10, Kole was seriously injured after being hit by a scooter. After initial treatment at another health facility, he was shifted to SSKM Hospital after his condition deteriorated.
