New Delhi [India], Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired his first Union Cabinet meeting after being sworn in as PM for his third term and announced plans to finance the construction of houses for 3 crore additional rural and urban families under the Prime Minister's Decided to provide assistance. Housing Scheme (PMAY).

The Union Cabinet meeting today decided to provide assistance to 3 crore additional rural and urban families to build houses to meet the housing requirements arising due to increase in the number of eligible families.

This decision is in response to the increasing number of families eligible for housing assistance.

The Government is implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana from 2015-16 to provide assistance to eligible rural and urban households for construction of houses with basic amenities.

A total of 4.21 crore houses have been constructed for eligible poor families under the housing schemes under PMAY in the last 10 years.

All houses constructed under PMAY are provided with other basic amenities like household toilet, LPG connection, electricity connection, functional household tap connection etc. through convergence with other schemes of the Central Government and State Governments.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) Mission was launched in June 2015, with the objective of providing housing for all in urban areas by the year 2022.

In August 2022, the Union Cabinet approved the continuation of PMAY-U till December 31, 2024, with all verticals except Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) for completion of houses already sanctioned by March 31, 2022.

It is one of the major flagship programs being implemented by the Government of India under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
