Voting is underway for Jalandhar West Assembly by-election in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Voting began at 7 am on Wednesday amid tight security arrangements and will continue till 6 pm, officials said. Counting of votes will take place on July 13.

Jalandhar West constituency is witnessing a multi-cornered contest, where major political parties like AAP, Congress and BJP are vying to outdo each other.

Fifteen candidates are in the fray for the by-election.

There are a total of 1,71,963 eligible voters – 89,629 men, 82,326 women and eight third gender voters.

Officials said there are 874 physically handicapped (PWD) category voters for whom necessary arrangements for wheelchairs and pick-and-drop facilities have been made.

He said that a total of 181 polling stations have been created and 10 model polling stations have been created.

Jalandhar West assembly seat had become vacant after Sheetal Angural resigned from the post of AAP MLA and joined BJP in March.

The ruling AAP has fielded Mohinder Bhagat, son of former minister Bhagat Chunni Lal.

Congress has placed its bets on former senior deputy mayor Surinder Kaur, while BJP has fielded Angural.

Although Shiromani Akali Dal had fielded Surjit Kaur for the by-election, it later withdrew its support amid the ongoing internal strife in the party and rejected Surjit Kaur.

Later, SAD had announced its decision to support BSP candidate Binder Kumar for the by-election.
