Hoshiarpur (Punjab): A 16-year-old girl drowned while a 22-year-old man was rescued after she jumped into a canal in a village here on Tuesday in a suspected suicide attempt, police said.

Dasuya station house officer (SHO) Harprem Singh said preliminary investigation revealed that the two were in a relationship.

Police said the incident took place around noon in Uchi Bassi village, about 48 km from Hoshiarpur.

Both of them jumped into the Mukerian Hydel Canal at Uchi Bassi. He told that when some passers-by saw him drowning, he managed to save the man but failed to save the girl.

He said that the body of the Class 10 student has been sent to Civil Hospital, Dasuya for postmortem.

The SHO said that the police are trying to find out what circumstances forced the duo to take this step, further investigation is underway.
