The AIADMK has fielded R Sivasam Velumani against Kanimozhi, while the Tamil Nadu Congress (Moopanar) is contesting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from the Thoothukudi seat. In the 2019 elections, Kanimozhi won against BJP's Tamilisai Soundararajan by a margin of 3,47,209 votes. Who is contesting from Chennai South this time, the key issues of the constituency include the demand for livelihood in the villages of Thoothukudi which were affected by monsoon and floods, as well as, proper drainage in the Thoothukudi urban area in the 2019 general elections. Demand for facilities is also included. The secular progressive alliance led by Congress, VCK, MDMK, CPI, CPI(M), IUML, MMK, KMDK, TVK and AIFB registered a landslide victory by winning 38 out of 39 seats in the state.
