Kolkata, West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress on Tuesday issued a show cause notice to its Chopra MLA Hamidul Rehman for making statements in support of the public thrashing of a couple that has rocked the state.

The incident, which took place last week in North Dinajpur district, was caught on camera and the video showed a man whipping the couple in public, sending shockwaves.

A senior TMC leader said, "The party has issued a show cause notice to Rehman for his comments and sought an explanation from him. The party does not in any way support the incident or the comments made by him."

The man seen in the video beating the couple with a stick was identified as Tajmul alias 'JCB', who is reportedly a TMC leader of Chopra and a close aide of Rehman.

Reacting to the incident, Rehman said on Monday, "The couple was allegedly in an illicit relationship, hence they were flogged. They were polluting the society through their activities."

"It was the woman's fault to indulge in illicit relations despite having a son and a husband. Is this not a crime? Is this not an immoral act?" He added.
