New Delhi [India], Japan-based conglomerate HORIBA Group, which already has two manufacturing units in India, on Saturday inaugurated its third and one of the largest manufacturing facilities for medical equipment and consumables in Nagpur.

In an exclusive interaction with ANI, Atsushi Horiba, Chairman and CEO of HORIBA Group, said that it is the right time for his group to increase investments in India.

"The timing is very important for us to invest in India. Now I think it is time for us to invest in India. We already have a good number of businesses in India, but I think we have to accelerate," Horiba said at the interaction with ANI.

Horiba says that India is growing rapidly and that is why he decided to invest in a new plant in Nagpur that will not only boost Make in India but will also have R&D and innovation facilities.

"India is growing very quickly. And not only that, but it has great potential with people (the country has). So we are not only interested in having a business but also in improving our R&D capacity" Horiba said.

With global headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, the HORIBA group's 50 companies operate in 29 countries and regions around the world and have global business revenues of $2.3 billion.

The Japanese conglomerate believes that government policies and the country's demographics are reasons to invest in India. The Nagpur plant has manufacturing, R&D and innovation facilities.

On why they chose Nagpur and not any coastal city with port connectivity to set up the new plant, Jai Hakhu, President, HORIBA India, said, "We chose Nagpur because it is the central location in India and the manufactured items can be distributed equitably." ...I don't need ports. I only need transportation to supply the entire India," Hakhu said.

The cost of the newly inaugurated Nagpur plant is pegged at Rs 200 crore, Haiku said, adding that they were open to investing as much as needed in the future.

More than 90 per cent of the equipment manufactured at the Nagpur plant will be used for domestic markets and the remaining 10 per cent will be exported to neighboring countries, Hakhu added.

The Nagpur unit will start with the production of reagents and in future, the group intends to venture into manufacturing other hematology-focused medical devices in India.

Hakhu said that they have a dominant position in India in all the fields they operate in, and it is not just limited to medical.

“We are manufacturing mass flow controllers, a critical component needed for semiconductor production,” Hakhu added.

HORIBA stated that it has more than 60 percent market share in the production of mass flow controllers globally. A mass flow controller is typically a device used to measure and control the flow of liquids and gases.

"...and that is a very critical component in manufacturing, and we intend and have started small in Pune, but we have enough land in Nagpur to build a full factory to meet the demands of the next five to ten years ". Hakhu said. At this time, Horiba is focusing solely on this critical component: the mass flow controller.

"Our philosophy is to do what we do best and not go anywhere else. And if we supply this (mass flow controller), we will be in very good shape."

On the India-Japan Act East Forum, and whether Horiba has plans to invest in the eastern and northeastern part of India, the regions that desperately need more industries, Hakhu said:

"Our philosophy is to follow where the factories are. For example, we recently opened an office in Gujarat thanks to the factories. For the northeast region, it will be the same."

Act East Forum was created following the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2017 with two main objectives: development of the northeastern region of India and promoting connectivity within and between this region. and Southeast Asia.

HORIBA started its direct operations in India in 2006 with its head office in Delhi and is present in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. The company has two manufacturing facilities in Haridwar and Pune.

HORIBA group broadly focuses on the business of automotive, environmental and process instruments, medical diagnostics, critical components for semiconductors and scientific instruments.
