The number of attacks by Russia has doubled within two years, SAI Managing Director Bernhard Rohleder said on German public broadcaster ZDF on Monday morning.

The number of known incidents in China has also increased by 50 percent, he said. According to the Bitcom director, 80 percent of the affected companies were targeted by attacks such as data theft, espionage and sabotage.

Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Feser and Holger Munch, president of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), plan to present a "national situation report on cyber crime" for 2023 on Monday morning.

In particular, the number of crimes committed from abroad or from an unknown location has been increasing over the years, the BKA had previously said. This also applies to the amount of damage caused by cybercrime to companies in Germany.

"Cyber attacks alone cause losses of 148 billion euros ($159 billion) per year," Bitcom's Rohleder said. "It's a huge amount of money."

He said organized crime, such as foreign intelligence services, is often behind these attacks.

"Some are after the money," Rohleder said, adding that other criminals do not want to cause as much damage as possible to critical infrastructure such as energy supplies or hospitals.

"And there are still some people, especially private individuals, who just want to have fun," he said.
