All 80 people trapped in the Pali Falls in Sattari taluka of Panaji, Goa, were rescued by the state fire and emergency services and police on Sunday, an official said.

The people were trapped after the water suddenly rose in the upper stream and the river they had to cross to reach the waterfall was flooded by noon amid heavy rains in the area over the weekend, the official said.

He said that being Sunday there was a huge crowd of visitors at the site.

"All 80 people have been rescued from the Pali Falls. No casualties were reported. The rescue operation was carried out in coordination with Goa fire and emergency services," Superintendent of Police (North) Akshat Kaushal said in the evening.

According to officials, the rescue operation started after the people trapped there informed Valpoi police station and sought help.

In another development, the state education department declared holiday in schools on Monday in view of incessant rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a 'red alert' for the state till Tuesday.

"In view of the continuous rains and the alert issued by the IMD, Goa Center regarding heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and keeping in mind the safety of small children, it is decided to declare a holiday on Monday in all schools in the state," the circular issued said. The decision has been taken,” said state education director Shailesh Jhingade.

"It is also clarified that the leave is for students as well as teachers. However, teachers appointed for training will report for training," the circular said.

The education department has asked students to stay indoors amid heavy rains and avoid flooded roads, river banks and other such dangerous places.
