Panaji, Three Goa Police personnel have been suspended in connection with the death of a 32-year-old laborer whom they had caught for a petty crime and later released, an official said on Friday.

The victim, Kanhaiyakumar Mandal, a native of Bihar, was found dead on the roadside in Lutolim in South Goa district on the intervening night of June 25 and 26, the official said.

Hours before his death, he said, Ponda police station personnel had caught Mandal for a minor crime and later released him outside their jurisdiction.

Initially, it appeared that he was crushed to death by a truck, but the post-mortem revealed that he was already dead after being hit by the vehicle, the officer said.

"According to the post-mortem report, the man had four stab wounds on his stomach and one on his neck," he said.

The truck driver was taken into custody in Karnataka and is being interrogated at Maina Curtorim police station, the official said.

After investigation, Superintendent of Police (South) Sunita Sawant on Thursday ordered suspension of head constable Ravindra Naik and constables Ashwin Sawant and Pritesh Prabhu, he said.

The officer said the trio had not made any entry in the police diary about the person they had detained and released just outside the jurisdiction of the police station.

A case of murder has been registered against unknown persons in connection with the death and further investigation is underway, the officer said.
