The Southeast Asian country plans to increase the number of electric scooters to 720,000 and three-wheeler electric vehicles to 20,000 by 2030, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The national policy vision is to transform Cambodia into a country with optimal electric vehicles to support and achieve sustainable development and ensure people’s well-being,” the government said in the release.

It said EVs have gained popularity in Cambodia due to their low fuel costs and environmental friendliness.

It says, "Using an EV costs only 9,633 riel (US$2.35) for a distance of 100 kilometres, while using petrol or diesel cars costs up to 35,723 riel (US$8.71) "

At present, Cambodia has officially registered a total of 1,614 electric cars, 914 electric scooters and 440 three-wheel electric vehicles. There are 21 EV charging stations in the state.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the three most popular EV brands in Cambodia are China's BYD, Japan's Toyota and America's Tesla.

The Cambodian government has reduced import duties on EVs by about 50 percent from 2021 compared to taxes on conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Udom Pise, EV manager of Car4U Co Ltd, which imports Latin Mango EVs from China, said EVs have far fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel vehicles, so maintenance and repair costs are also cheaper.

“Using EVs not only saves money on fuel but also reduces air pollution,” he said.
